Driving in London? You must be flipping ‘van rental’ (cockney rhyming slang, see?). That is most people’s reaction to the prospect of manoeuvring a motor vehicle through the crowded streets of the UK’s capital. From the unique driving approaches taken by London’s road users (all across the spectrum from black cabs to white van man) to some of the particularly unsuitable vehicles that you have to share the road with – Mr. bendy bus? I’m looking at you!
Well sometimes in life what you want to do and what you have to do are two different things. Driving in London is one of those situations. You can praise the tube ‘til you are blue in the face, you can even be one of that special breed of hardcore fixed-wheel bicycle enthusiasts. It won’t make an difference when you are somewhere in the uncharted urban sprawl of South London and you need to get a wardrobe to Wapping you are realistically going to need a van. No two ways about it.
Increasingly the pressure in London is to have smaller and smaller vehicles. Due to many years of aggressively anti-motorist policy, London now abounds with Smart cars, those glorified electric mobility scooters and the like. Fewer and fewer people have access to a van or any other vehicle of any practical sort of size. This means for most, when they need to move some furniture they are going to have to go the route of van rental.
Van Hire, London being no exception can go one of either two ways. Either you can arrange rental of a van complete with driver (one of those famously careful White Van Men) or you can hire a van and drive it yourself. Van rental is therefore an essential service, and without van hire, London, like many places would grind to a halt.
