The art of packing

Knowing what to pack for your trip can be the most stressful part of your holiday. There really is no need for this, and you should not let it ruin your day. Part of what can make it a stressful experience is worrying that you have packed the wrong things. While not having something with you that you would like is obviously not ideal, don’t panic, it is probably not the end of the world.

1. Choose your bags wisely! When packing the first thing you need to consider is your luggage. Research to see what the airline you will be using allows as carry-on baggage and try to get the largest bag that is allowed. As far as any hold baggage you will be taking make sure that it conforms to the airlines rule. Another thing to consider is how easily you will be able to move the luggage about. If you are taking a large suitcase, maybe get one with wheels to make it easier to get about the place. If you suspect you may need to transport your things large distances or over uneven terrain consider getting a large rucksack. Spend the extra on comfort if you can!

2. Don’t feel that you need to completely fill your bags. Try to take the minimum that you can. It is a good idea to leave as much space as possible free in your baggage. You will want to bring back souvenirs from your trip – if you have some free space then you won’t have to choose to leave anything behind at the airport on your way home.

3. Weigh your bags before you set off. The easiest way to do this is to stand on an ordinary bathroom scale, then pick up your bag and see how much weight it adds. The charges for going over the weight limit on baggage can be really extreme, sometimes doubling the cost of flying on a ‘low-cost’ airline.

4. Don’t leave it to the last minute. Try to pack well in advance of your departure. Also, try to make a list, or at least have a think about what you will be taking. This means that you can make sure you have all the clothes you need clean and ready.

5. Fold all your clothes carefully. This is especially aimed at all you messy packers. Not only will carefully folding your clothes help ensure they don’t get all creased, but they will actually take up less room in your bag.

6. Think about what clothes you will need for your trip. The climate and the time of year in the place you are going will obviously dictate what kind of clothes you should take. Try to take at least one smart classy outfit complete with shoes. For men perhaps a linen suit and leather shoes, for women choose one or two of your best dresses. Don’t forget to take some quality lingerie as well.

7. Don’t panic. The chances are that there are shops where you are going. If you forget anything you should be able to pick it up someplace. Who knows, it might even be a fun adventure!
