It is taking a while, but it seems as the motor manufacturers are beginning to wake up to the problem of global climate change. Cars and other vehicles make a contribution to the total carbon-dioxide released by burning fossil fuels. The automobile industry is beginning to respond to these concerns as well as to market pressure looking for more fuel efficient vehicles due to rising oil prices.
Veteran automobile giants Volkswagen are the latest manufacturers to produce an electric offering. 2013 will see the launch of the VW Golf Blue e-motion. This is to be a fully electric vehicle that will outwardly resemble the current VW Golf styling. This solves the problem of looks with electric vehicles, by giving the car a body shape widely recognized as being both practical and desirable.
Another issue that is frequently of concern with electric vehicles is performance. The new VW certainly addresses that. A massive 114 horse power combined with a limited top speed of 85 miles an hour means that it will be a practical alternative to petrol fuelled hatch backs. Whilst the range of 93 miles may not be so far, it will be enough for most purposes.
VW is not abandoning fuel burning engines altogether yet though, which is good news for those who enjoy the thrill of motorsports. In fact they have announced that despite having no history in the sport, they will be making a bid to become the sole engine supplier for formula one. If they are successful in this consumers can expect the millions that VW will pour into development to lead to technical innovations in their mass production engines.
